The nation carries what it treats as three crises. Mental health. Addiction. Chronic pain. Three budgets, three agencies, decades of spending, and the numbers will not move.
Care was split into estates long ago, the body to medicine, the mind to psychiatry, the spirit to the chaplain. The people who live at the intersection have fallen through the seams ever since.
The clinic is never the church. The church is never the clinic.
David Wade Pope is the founder of BGD Collective. He spent more than twenty years in neuromodulation and interventional pain. Before that he served as a decorated Fleet Marine Force Search and Rescue Corpsman, trained to reach the casualty who cannot reach himself. He is in long-term recovery. He calls himself the first proof of the work, not its theorist.
