Look in the cell.
If you want to find the people that three systems failed at once, do not look in the margins. Look in the cell.
The cycle of return to custody is not a law of nature. It is a set of barriers. Barriers can be removed.
Designed in full. Being stood up now.
Breaking the Cycle is the corrections initiative of the integrated architecture: the reach of the work into the correctional facility and the reentry road, for the people three systems have failed at once.
If there is a moral floor, it runs through the cell.
Book Three, The Entheos Project
We built these facilities to contain, not to restore.
We wrote them off. Not with cruelty, most of the time. With resignation. We simply stopped believing there was a whole person under the debris.
The untreated condition that was never addressed inside.
The closed church door on the outside that will not receive the returning person.
The recovery rooms they cannot yet access.
The release gate crossed with no continuity, no plan, no one waiting.
He has sent Me … to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.
Not what he did. Who he was before.
One day someone sits down across from him, someone who is not there to process him or assess him or move him along, and asks him his name, and then asks him something no one has asked him in years. Not what he did. Who he was before.
Being known is a kind of food, and he has been starving for it without a word for the hunger.
The plan belongs to the person, because the person is the only one who can carry their own two faces across the gate.
The single highest-risk moment of all.
Then comes the gate. The gate is the single highest-risk moment of all. It is the seam where every system has historically dropped this person, and the weeks just after release are the most dangerous of their life.
The person does not leave with a phone number. They leave with someone beside them and a plan they own and consented to.
He does not walk out into nothing. He walks out into a hand.
Heal the one person.
The work does not hold the person forever. It carries them across the gate into the community that will.
Heal the one person, and you do not heal one person. You change what a child inherits. You give a mother back her son. You put one whole strand back into a neighborhood that was unraveling.
The person who was caught becomes the one who catches.
Two hands can hold the same person without becoming the same hand.
One person is served by both, and the person never becomes a shared file.
What crosses between the faces crosses only when the person chooses to let it cross. The person is the only integrator of their own two faces. That is not a limitation on the care. It is the dignity at the center of it.
Not tolerate him. Receive him.
Somewhere on the outside, that man needs a congregation that will receive him. Not tolerate him. Receive him.
The church that stands at the gate and says, we saved you a seat, we know where you have been, come in anyway, has become what it was always meant to be.
I was in prison and you came to visit Me.
Restoration is not the opposite of accountability.
Writing a person off is not justice. It is despair, wearing the costume of justice. Real justice looks a wrong dead in the face, and still leaves the door to redemption standing open.
If restoration can reach the cell, the hardest case there is, then what is your excuse for the person across your own kitchen table?
The invitation is to help open the prison, and to hold the one who walks out until the cycle is broken.
